Custom Vent FAQs

Custom vent covers function the same as other standard vent covers. Their purpose is to prevent undue amounts of dust, dirt, and debris from entering the HVAC system and therefore help improve the air quality in your home.

Can These Be Used As Floor Vents?

No, they should not be used in floor vents. Our custom vent covers are made of top-quality high-density machine board (HDM) and are designed to withstand the wear and tear of regular use in walls, ceilings, and toe-kicks areas throughout the home. Placing them in floor vents will likely damage the material and reduce the aesthetic effect our vent cover designs have on your interiors. Christopher Scott Cabinetry does create metal vent covers—great for use on floor vents—as special orders. Contact us directly for more information on custom metal vent covers.

How Do Custom Vents Work?

Custom vent covers function the same as other standard vent covers. Their purpose is to prevent undue amounts of dust, dirt, and debris from entering the HVAC system and therefore help improve the air quality in your home. Our custom vent covers can be easily installed directly over the vent holes in your walls, ceilings, and toe kicks in order to perform their proper function.

What Are Your Vents Made Of?

Our custom vent covers are made of top quality high-density machine board (HDM), designed and manufactured right here in the U.S. Working with this material allows us to create beautifully intricate designs while keeping customer costs lower than cast options, while providing the opportunity for complete color customization to complement any interior.

Can I Mix Different Designs Throughout My Home?

Of course. If you feel that one design works better than another in one particular room, customize your spaces as you wish. Each of our designs harmonizes wonderfully with the others in order to provide a sense of continuity throughout your home without having to feel overly matchy.

Do You Do Custom Vent Designs?

When working with a full design and build job, we do create fully customized vent cover designs. That said, we’ve found that the timelessly popular vent cover designs we’ve created and currently sell to the general public offer enough variety to elevate any interior. But that isn’t to say we won’t offer new designs in the future.

Do You Do Custom Sizes On Vents?

When working with a full design and build job, we do create fully customized vent cover sizes. However, most vents in most homes have standardized venting that requires a few basic size options that we make sure to offer in our custom vent shop.

How Much Do Custom Vents Cost?

Custom vent costs can vary greatly depending on material and size. However, the custom vent covers offered in the Christopher Scott Cabinetry & Design shop are created with cost-effective materials, ready to fully customize into a premium home upgrade. As such they are offered at the low price of $18.99 per piece.

How Do I Measure My Vent For The Right Size?

Measuring for new vent covers is not difficult. Most HVAC systems use standard sizes, but you’ll want to measure properly to ensure you purchase the right vent cover sizes. Once you’ve removed an old vent cover, measure the ceiling or wall hole it came from—with no overhang—to find what size of vent cover you will need to replace the old one with. Do not measure from screw hole to screw hole as that will give you an inaccurate measurement.

Do Your Vents Need Filters?

Because these custom filters are for supply vents rather than return vents (discover more about the difference between the two here), they do not require a filter. Most HVAC systems use filters in their return vents to prevent dust and debris from being pulled into the system, with other filters being placed at the actually heating/cooling appliance. While some homeowners request vent screens or filters to discourage toys and other debris from falling into the HVAC system, we strongly discourage them because they will disrupt optimal airflow. And being designed for use in the ceiling, wall, or toe kick areas, our custom vent covers should not need or have an optional filter installed.

What Are Your Most Popular Vent Designs?

All four of the vent designs we’ve chosen for our custom vent cover shop (Squares, Diamonds, Stars, Big Stars) are classic and timeless patterns that we’ve found are very popular with our customers. They each have just enough personality to complement but not distract from any interior design concept we’ve come across.

How Do I Choose The Best Design For My Vents?

The best design for your vents is going to be the one that enhances your interiors. Whether that means choosing something you think will stand out or blend in is up to you. We do recommend matching styles generally, however, so think in terms of your overarching aesthetic themes like Scandinavian, Mid-Century, Farmhouse, Industrial. Pinpointing your style should guide you to choose the right vent design for your home.

How Do I Install A Custom Vent?

Our custom vents were created to give your home the most impact while requiring as little effort as possible. Installation of our custom vent covers is as simple as customizing with primer and paint, then installing over existing vent holes with two screws and a screwdriver. For more detailed instructions on how to install our vents, check out our easy-to-follow vent installation instructions post on the Christopher Scott Cabinetry blog.

Do I Need a Primer Before Painting Custom Vents?

Priming your custom vent covers is a critical step to enhancing your interiors. Primer acts as a foundation for whatever paint you choose and will help ensure the durability of your vent covers long-term. Learn more about priming and painting vent covers here!

How Do I Paint A Custom Vent?

With a little preparation and a few simple tools, painting your custom vent covers should be a painless process. You’ll want a sprayer or lint-free paint roller, as well as the proper paint for the project. How Often Should Custom Vents Be Cleaned?

Cleaning your custom vent covers should become part of your monthly cleaning routine. Wiping with a damp, lint-free towel regularly should clear the vent of any dust or oily buildup. For bigger messes like a kitchen spill, using a mild soap with your lint-free towel should do the trick without damaging your vent cover.
