Our Custom Cabinetry Journey with Tan France in Architectural Digest’s ‘Home at Last’

A few years ago we began working on another exciting project with the Fox Group — creating the Tan France home right here in Salt Lake City.

Christopher Scott Cabinetry has worked with the Fox Group for many years to create beautiful homes. We’ve had incredible opportunities to showcase everything from bespoke bathroom vanities and kitchen cabinetry to entirely custom dream closet designs and beyond. A few years ago we began working on another exciting project with the Fox Group — creating the Tan France home right here in Salt Lake City.

Architectural Digest’s feature ‘Home At Last With Tan France’ showcases the incredible home brought to life by The Fox Group and the many contractors they worked with to create the France family’s dream home—complete with custom cabinetry throughout by Christopher Scott Cabinetry. From the intimate primary suite to the ultimate dream closet and onto the breathtaking kitchen area, you’ll see our custom cabinetry, furniture, and even hardware designed just for Tan and his family.

Creating Harmony in the Primary Suite

From the outset, Tan and Rob made it very clear that the primary suite would be an important focal point in their home.

From the outset, Tan and Rob made it very clear that the primary suite would be an important focal point in their home. First and foremost, they were serious about wanting an intimate setting in the bedroom that felt authentic not only to their style but to their unique relationship and personal habits. Those requests made their way into the custom bedroom design in many ways, including refining custom wallpaper, ensuring the right fabric color for the custom headboard, and the one-of-a-kind fireplace originally sketched by Rob himself. But you’ll also see in watching this episode of the Architectural Digest feature that the custom bedroom furniture pieces played an important role in how the entire space came together around the bed.

Meeting Tan in the Christopher Scott Cabinetry workshop was a privilege and a delight. With every new client, we have the opportunity to design and create the right pieces of furniture, built just for them in terms of style and function.

Meeting Tan in the Christopher Scott Cabinetry workshop was a privilege and a delight. With every new client, we have the opportunity to design and create the right pieces of furniture, built just for them in terms of style and function. But it’s also a chance to prove that we bring something distinctive to the table, too. Surprising Tan with the addition of the fluted design to the nightstands that would be built into the custom bed frame was a great way to elevate an already beautiful request. (You’ll also note that we removed the technology for opening the drawer after getting his feedback—again, our job is to ensure that what we produce is right for the individual it’s made for. And for Tan and Rob, tech, in this sense, is not a friend.)

The bedroom design in the primary suite speaks purely of personalized and cozy luxury. There is also a prominent nod to the South Asian vibe which is so important to the France family.

The bedroom design in the primary suite speaks purely of personalized and cozy luxury. There is also a prominent nod to the South Asian vibe which is so important to the France family. You see that influence coming through in the floral wallpaper design, the charm of the archways, and the color palette used in the room. It’s also brought to life in the custom built-in bed frame with attached nightstands that we created at Christopher Scott Cabinetry. Designing and building bespoke furniture like this allows us to offer one-of-a-kind customization to our clients on every level.

Everything from the rich stain color and prominent wood grain to the traditional gold bar cabinet pulls—both beautifully complemented by the addition of the scalloped top drawer—speaks to Tan and Rob’s unique aesthetic without overpowering the other well-thought-out elements of design in the master bedroom.

The other significant portion of the primary suite was the master bathroom, largely inspired by Rob’s vision of the space. The whole room feels utterly fresh and clean, yet still incredibly calming and warm. The complementary combination of custom tile work and natural wood floors do plenty of the heavy lifting on that front. This is the kind of luxury interior design that feels so seamlessly meant-to-be when working with the right designers and craftsmen in bringing a unique vision to reality.

A large portion of the room’s visual design centers around the three archways built around the shower, tub, and toilet areas—which we were able to perfectly echo in the design of the custom bathroom vanities we created

A large portion of the room’s visual design centers around the three archways built around the shower, tub, and toilet areas—which we were able to perfectly echo in the design of the custom bathroom vanities we created. The subtlety of the two paint colors we ultimately went with gives just enough dimension to really give a voice to the bespoke cabinet door and drawer designs without pulling focus from the wallpaper that was so important to the couple. The hardware on the master bathroom vanities was also chosen carefully to harmonize with the tub and shower features, faucets, lighting, and switch covers.

One of the things we particularly love about the custom bathroom vanities (aside from the marital wisdom Tan shares that we’ve long been proponents of—two sinks, happy marriage!) in the Tan France home is the fluted cabinet front design.

One of the things we particularly love about the custom bathroom vanities (aside from the marital wisdom Tan shares that we’ve long been proponents of—two sinks, happy marriage!) in the Tan France home is the fluted cabinet front design. Those vertical lines lift the look and heighten its impact, just like the arched toe kick beneath it. That also lets the built-in furniture breathe and reduces its visual weight, all while mindfully echoing the arch pattern throughout the room. This piece is very obviously not bought off the shelf—it’s high-quality custom furniture designed for this exact couple in this exact bathroom. And that is the power we aim to give all of our custom woodwork projects. Each piece should look and feel as if it were always meant to be exactly where it is and function exactly how the homeowner needs it to, just like right here in the Tan France home.

Tan France’s Dream Closet

Being a part of bringing Tan’s dream closet design to life was a privilege and a challenge for Christopher Scott Cabinetry. Our team worked hard to make this vital component of the Tan France home everything that he wanted it to be—from our own hands-on craftsmanship to knowing when to turn to CNC machine woodworking, we were able to create a “stupid good” (Tan’s description, not ours) blend of high-end cabinetry and unique millwork that will be a foundational part of everyday life in the Tan France home.

There are three significant spaces that make up this custom closet design—so significant, in fact, that each space can rightly be called a room in and of itself. But the artistic details, including the geo print latticework, the very Indian-inspired scalloped arches, and the custom-designed corbels, bring cohesion to each area of the bespoke closet design despite the variety of color and purpose in each room.

Cabinetry and Millwork

The cabinetry and millwork throughout the Tan France closet go beyond just personalized home decor. As with the custom bedroom furniture in the primary suite, this space is built to embody the person it’s been designed for as if it were absolutely meant to be this way and no other. This means it is imperative to use our team’s expert skill set in order to know when to do exactly what the client has asked for and when to add just enough to help them fully realize the potential for perfection in every detail.

The meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating the custom corbels was one such opportunity in this dream closet design.

The meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating the custom corbels was one such opportunity in this dream closet design. You’ll notice, particularly during the interview with Cara and Tom Fox in the dream closet episode, that the additional woodwork at the base of each corbel, as well as its beveled edging, really make it something special and unique. Then you add in the personal touch of the hand-painted stenciling created specifically for this project, and it doesn’t get much better.

Technology in Craftsmanship

The intricate detailing of the geo print latticework you see in Tan’s closet is so complex that utilizing our CNC machinery was key to the success of such an important visual feature of the custom closet design

The intricate detailing of the geo print latticework you see in Tan’s closet is so complex that utilizing our CNC machinery was key to the success of such an important visual feature of the custom closet design. As you tour the closet in the Architectural Digest feature, you see that this pattern is used on the custom closet doors, the unique closet island design, the ceiling, and even on custom hardware and light fixtures throughout. Utilizing technology in this way allows for producing identical work and perfectly repeated patterns in a variety of materials and by a variety of artisans, if necessary. But it also increases opportunities for dimension and drama, which were certainly key elements of this bespoke closet design for Tan.

Unique Features in the Tan France Closet

While every single part of the Tan France closet is unique, given his passionate lifestyle, distinct line of work, heritage, family, and more, we are particularly drawn to the center section of the closet space where Tan intends to produce his content.

While every single part of the Tan France closet is unique, given his passionate lifestyle, distinct line of work, heritage, family, and more, we are particularly drawn to the center section of the closet space where Tan intends to produce his content. Between the dimensional latticework, warm clay paint color, and cultural design elements surrounding the three mirrors, this space is truly special.

We also love the powerful callback to his Asian roots by employing an antique swing rather than a bench in the blue space. While these things are unique to Tan and his family, we love recognizing opportunities unique to each of our clients that ensure their spaces feel made perfectly for them.

Embracing the Heart of the Home: Tan France’s Kitchen

Tan’s passion for bringing his heritage to life drove the aesthetics for almost every nook and cranny of the Frances’ high-end kitchen design.

Tan’s passion for bringing his heritage to life drove the aesthetics for almost every nook and cranny of the Frances’ high-end kitchen design. But artfully combining that love with a bit of the Western world made for a bright yet grounded space that Tan himself can’t help but smile in. From the cabinetry that echoes Indian culture and the Indian scallop on the arched kitchen hood mantle to the butcher block and classic black and white tile, both styles blend with intention in many custom features we loved helping create for the Tan France home.

Spice Kitchen Doors

The custom doors on the cabinetry found in the spice kitchen were a great work in collaboration between Christopher Scott Cabinetry and the France family.

The custom doors on the cabinetry found in the spice kitchen were a great work in collaboration between Christopher Scott Cabinetry and the France family. You see here that same latticework designed by Rob that was found in Tan’s closet but utilized here with the addition of that ultimate Indian palace scalloped arch done by us—in just the right shade of white, chosen by Tan himself. These doors are a highlight of the space, and alongside the meticulously crafted and inset bespoke cabinetry, they make the spice kitchen feel “like a gorgeous slice of South Asia, in the most modern, chic way,” as Tan put it.

Antique Aesthetic

As modern as the Frances’ luxury home kitchen itself appears, it also pulls old-world influence that keeps it grounded and cozy. One of the ways to achieve this impact is through carefully distressing particular pieces, such as the custom hood mantle over that incredibly new-world stove. Our team wire brushed and deeply stained the wood in order to add depth to what could have appeared as a sleek and contemporary focal point but instead took up the character of a much older and more impactful design element in the kitchen.

Intentional Kitchen Design

At Christopher Scott Cabinetry and Design, we look for opportunities to make every part of our designs purposeful.

At Christopher Scott Cabinetry and Design, we look for opportunities to make every part of our designs purposeful. Whether that comes through function or style, each element has the potential to have an impact on a space. One place we wanted to ensure we didn’t lose that potential in the France kitchen was the custom island design. Rather than leave the end of the island bare, we enhanced it with a richly-stained butcher block to again marry those Asian and Western influences.

But we didn’t stop there—by adding that extra bit of Asian flair in the dimensional medallions and peaked arch we ensured that every square inch of this kitchen says who the France family is and what they value in their lives. We want all our clients to feel like their own custom kitchen designs are, in fact, dynamite.

But we didn’t stop there—by adding that extra bit of Asian flair in the dimensional medallions and peaked arch we ensured that every square inch of this kitchen says who the France family is and what they value in their lives.

As you look for our custom cabinetry design in this episode of Tan’s Architectural Digest feature, you can also take a metaphorical step back to appreciate the overall kitchen layout and how each cabinet door, kitchen island design element, or arched architectural feature comes together to become what you can feel is the exact right look and feel for this space. It takes an incredible team of professional designers and builders in The Fox Group, a family with impeccable style and trust, as well as a lucky team of talented craftsmen at Christopher Scott Cabinetry, to bring it all together.
